Custom DNS records

Point an internal hostname straight at an IP address with a custom DNS record.

A custom DNS record points a hostname directly at an IP address. It is the Cloud DNS equivalent of a hosts file: useful for on-site services that never make it into public DNS, such as an internal portal, a printer, or a local appliance. Custom records are answered directly by Cloud DNS and are independent of your blocklists and allowlists.

Custom records live on the Custom Entries tab of the DNS settings.

Add a record

Section titled “Add a record”

  1. Open Custom Entries

    On the DNS tab, select Custom Entries.

  2. Add the host and IP

    Click Add Custom Entry, then enter the Host (the internal hostname, for example intranet.example) and the IP it should resolve to. Save.

A host is a single name, so custom records do not use wildcards. Clients on the network resolve the hostname to the IP you set, as long as the network is in Cloud DNS mode.
